So long! Farewell!

Kristin, here! Reporting one last time from Reruns Boutique. After about a year and a half of being in the Reruns family, I’m leaving all familiarity behind and charting new territory; this Saturday I’m moving to Charleston, SC to start a new chapter of my teensy life! As the acting social media manager here, it only seemed appropriate to write a farewell blog…so here it is! In my time at Reruns, I have learned many things from how to find a pair of jeans that actually fit my body to the sheer perfection that makes up a genuine, hand-painted Hermes scarf.

Though it may sound cheesy, I’ve also learned a whole heck of a lot about myself and my personal style. I learned that being tall with broad shoulders and narrow hips doesn’t mean I can’t wear beautiful, well-made, tailored clothing. I learned that being pale-skinned and minimalistic can be and is beautiful. I learned that the size on the tag doesn’t matter as long as I look and feel good. I learned that I can rock heels even if it makes me almost six-foot tall. I learned that although I wear 85% of my clothing oversized, clothing really can be too big, not just too small. I learned that personal style is not an obsession over materialistic things and outward appearances, but an exercise in finding confidence and a sense of self. Finally, I learned that confidence looks good on everyone; not that I don’t have my insecurities, but I’ve learned that dwelling on them does nothing for me.

As I move into this new era of my life, my grand plan is to implement the parts of my current style that I love but with more care and diligence, more refinement, if you will. What I mean is I want to take my look and just polish it up a bit. So, here’s what I’m imagining (a girl can dream!)

Hair: Messy, curly and effortless is what it’s all about. Perfect beach look, don’t you think?

messy-bun

Make-up: I don’t wear much make-up, but I want the little bit that I do wear to perfectly accent my blue eyes and fair skin. I love this look from Fashion Week.

makeup

Top: I love love love flowy, oversized tops and that love will most likely only grow stronger living in a place where its 95 degrees and sunny all the time. Something like this Free People top will be a wardrobe staple, for sure.

Nails: Harper’s Bazaar says neutral nails are all the rage this season. I’m in love with this natural look. Polished but not too extravagant!

neutral nails

Bottoms: Jorts jorts jorts. I don’t care what anyone says, I love them. I especially love the high-waisted look, its flattering, interesting, and fashionable.

denim shorts

Shoes: I wore the hell out of my low-top Converse in high school and my roommate has recently resurrected them. Now I want some high-tops!

Surely my style profile will change with the seasons (literally and metaphorically), but Reruns has taught me about fashion as a form of expression so I feel positive that said changes will just be a natural part of my personal evolution.  Leaving Reruns means leaving behind a little family of amazing women who have shaped me, challenged me, supported me, and befriended me. But, I’m leaving with lasting relationships, extensive knowledge about well-made clothing, a surer sense of self, and some GREAT articles of clothing that are staples in my wardrobe.

I want to thank all my dear, sweet, beautiful co-workers for the opportunity to be a part of this fun, fashionable and fabulous family and send you all a million kisses!

Until next time!

Kristin

Sit back, get a good cup of tea, and get ready to click to your heart’s content. Enjoy!

FYI: These are in no particular order.

.::LARGE SCALE BLOGS::.

1. Fashion Toast: This blog, one of Kristin’s favorites, features Rumi Neely a beautiful fashion goddess, living in San Francisco, who got her start by simply photographing her everyday outfits and posting them to her page. She must be doing something right, because Rumi went from being an internet fashion star to the new face for Forever 21. Her outfits are beautiful, her hair is tossled perfectly, and the photos aren’t hard to look at either! Check it out y’all, happy dreaming!

2. What Do I Wear?: What’s so great about this blog is it uses photos submitted by real people (like us!) and tells you the brands of everything in the photo.  Although some of the pieces are expensive designer ones, it is encouraging because a lot of the stuff is from H&M, Forever 21, and other accessible stores. Take a look!

3. The Sartorialist: Most fashion lovers have heard of this blog, but if you haven’t, you are in for a treat! Documenting street style at its finest, photographer Scott Schuman travels to all the great cities of the world to see what everyone is wearing. Let the drooling commence. Fun Fact: Our very own, KK, was featured on the site a few years ago at the Union Square Farmer’s Market in Manhattan!

4. xojane: We find this particular article, “28 Authentically Good Shopping Tips to Take Your Wardrobe to the Next Level,” from xo Jane a great guide to finding the perfect wardrobe for your body.  Everyone needs some help in this department from time to time, right?  I know I’m loving all this advice!

5. Urban Outfitters: As you may or may not know, Urban Outfitters is coming to Knoxville this Spring! It will be situated in the historic Arnstein Building at the corner of Market Square. Thus, it only seems appropriate to include the blog of our soon-to-be neighbors. Plus, this is a great place for both guys and gals to explore the limits of fashion.

6. Because I’m Addicted: This blog, one of Brianna’s favorites, follows the fashionable musings of a “20-something” living in Los Angeles.  Beautiful photos and crazy amazing fashion, pages upon pages; think you can deal with that?

7. Man Repeller: Another one of Bri’s recommendations, this blog is so awesome! What is a man repeller, you may ask? As defined on the website, it is “outfitting oneself in a sartorially offensive mode that may result in repelling members of the opposite sex.  Such garments include but are not limited to harem pants, boyfriend jeans, overalls (see: human repelling), shoulder pads, full length jumpsuits, jewlery that resembles violent weaponry, and clogs.” Despite the connotation, there is some great fashion to be found on this site. Plus, everyone loves a good challenge, right?

8. The Selby: This is one of Paris’s favorites. The operator of this blog, Todd Selby, goes into artists’s personal spaces to photograph all the beautiful and lush decor, constantly paying attention to details with an artist’s eye. It may not be a fashion blog in the traditional sense, but Lord knows a lot of fashion sense goes into decorating a home with style and class.

9. Kinfolk Magazine:  This is one of KK’s favorites. Kinfolk is a blog of lyrics, recipes, ideas, stories, and practical day to day tips that are targeted towards “a growing readership of young artists and food enthusiasts that focus on simple ways to spend time together.”  Simply put, this blog is one of those good for the soul types.

.::LOCAL BLOGS::.

1. Monks & Mannequins: This blog is extra special to us because it is operated by Paris Woodhull, our visual display manager, and her awesome dad, Chris. According to Paris and Chris, their blog is “about beauty, the beauty in us, on us, around us, among us and all about us.” They offer a unique glance at current issues from the viewpoint of an 18 year old and her father, both fantastically brilliant in their own seperate way. Seriously, just take a look, it’s so good!

2. Brianna Lamberson, Holistic Health Coach and Personal Stylist: The next blog is by Reruns manager and all around superstar, Brianna Lamberson. She’s wonderful, delightful, blunt, honest, and dang good at what she does.  As a certified health coach, her site offers recipes, natural remedies, and everyday habits that keep your body working at its best. Here, you can also explore opportunities for closet clean-outs and personal styling tips. You don’t want to miss this!

3. Southern Belle Simple:   Another favorite local blog to frequent is Kate Spears’s site. Her project is a “celebration of all the things that are particularly southern as well as a few others. It is meant to be a daily dose of loveliness which leaves its readers feeling a little lighter, a little better.”  As Kate herself says, it’s a culmination of a lot of things but at its core, it is “utterly southern, elaborately simple.”

4. Found Objects Creative: This blog is from someone we hold near and dear to our hearts, Anna Montgomery.  Anna is one of our most loyal and faithful consignors and customers and always brings light, happiness, and laughter into the store when she is here.  Her blog is very new, but has lots of promising potential; so check it out and keep up with it, you won’t be disappointed.

5. Stuck Inside of Knoxville With the Urban Blues Again: Owned and operated by a man under the pen name of “Knoxville Urban Guy”, this is a great blog for Knoxville locals and for guests of our fine city. It keeps everyone up to date on all the latest happenings in downtown and surrounding areas and links you to other great Knoxville blogs and sites!  Check it out, you may learn something new about K-Town!

6. Modern Sentiment: Yet another of our consignors and customers, we present to you Sarah Martin’s blog.  She is a local mixed-media artist who also enjoys connecting with others through her writing and general socializing. Check it out for tips of all kinds!

7. Rala: Regional and Local Artisans:  We obviously love our sister store’s blog!  Here you will find examples of all the unique regional and local art and gifts we have for sale in the store. We love Rala, and we hope you do too!

Technicolor Dream Scale

We’re carrying on our color theme from last week. We killed it on Fox-43 showing off the best of the best with Abby Ham. If you missed us live, fear not! Watch the video below and leave a comment if you love wearing brights for winter.

And to honor our campaign for color, we’re officially kicking off our colorized markdown system. We have been working hard to bring you a simplified markdown system that will make shopping here even more to die for.

Each month we will have new sales based on tag color. This month we’re debuting purple tags, so keep an eye out when you’re in the store.

Not to worry, we will keep you good and posted when a new color gets marked down. All you need to know is that these deals are hot and they are going fast. So if you want to catch them as soon as they roll out, subscribe to our mailing list and Like us on Facebook, where we share this info first!

Brighten Up Your Winter Wardrobe

Don’t get me wrong. I love winter. I love the grays, browns, taupes, and golds. But sometimes the bleakness of the season can get me feeling a little glum. I can get stuck in a somber clothing routine.

You may have heard of light therapy and supplementing with Vitamin D, but why not add a splash to your wardrobe to lift your spirits? Since the fashion world lives a season ahead of the real world, we’ll take a tip from them and brighten up our winter wardrobe.

I’ve chosen 5 major color themes from the runways to inspire my pursuit of sunshine. Polyvore.com is a wonderful resource if you want to create your own inspiration board like I have done.

Below, the girls and I show off the final product of our inspiration on WBIR FOX-43 with Abby Ham. Take look and be wowed.

Something We’re Thankful For

As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, we’re all thinking about filling our bellies with delicious food, spending time with people we love and reflecting on the things we’re thankful for.  Here at Reruns, we have hundreds of things to be thankful for, one of which is fashion. This may seem unimportant in the company of friends, family, shelter, food and water, but fashion has done a lot for us here at the store.

First of all, fashion is the reason Reruns even exists. Twenty-six years ago, it was Nanci’s love of fashion that inspired her to open the best consignment store in Knoxville.   We’re all thankful for that, right?!

Secondly, a love of fashion has brought many great, talented, smart, beautiful women together over the past twenty-six years.  It has been the source of many great friendships within the store staff. The bond between all of us currently here at the store is something that each and every one of us is thankful for. With a small staff, we have the amazing advantage of being able to have close, real relationships with our coworkers.  We do not walk into an office building full of faces that are only vaguely familiar, we walk into a warm environment greeted with a genuine hello and more often than not a big ole hug.  Over the past year, we’ve had so many great moments together it’s hard to pick a favorite; however, we managed to dig up a few snapshots.

Aside from relationships within the staff, we’ve also formed some really amazing relationships with our consignors and customers.  It’s more than just shopping, it’s a friendship or a bond based around a common love for fashion and the urge to lift up and enourage each other.  Reminding people they are beautiful, unique and talented is one of the things we enjoy most at Reruns; whether it results in lasting relationships or a short, candid encounter, a love for fashion brings great women together!

We’re also extremely thankful for the idea of “local fashion.”  Our small store is unique in that it offers designer and brand name clothing that is affordable and actually contributes to our local economy, not big businesses.  We’re thankful for recycling clothing, local jobs, the ethics of small business, and the sense of community all that brings along with it.  While we’re definitely thankful for the flawless beauty some designer clothing offers, we’re more thankful for well made clothing that enhances women and makes them feel beautiful.  After all, life isn’t about how much stuff we have, but how good we feel about the life we’re living and the way we feel about ourselves.  Fashion is also about more than looking good; it is an artform that connects men and women from all over the world.  All in all, whether it be fashion, music or your dog Bingo, be thankful for what you love, and love what you’re thankful for.

Happy holidays from the Reruns staff!

Show that you’re thankful for fashion and our local community this holiday season and shop, eat, drink, and buy local!

An Education

The fall season is upon us so we thought, what better way to get in the “back-to-school” spirit than to ask our resident high-schooler, Paris Woodhull, to talk about her adventures as a fashionista in her school. We think that her advice is tried and true, and even if you aren’t BTS age, you can easily implement her fashion tips into your own wardrobe. Take a look!

When most people think of going back to school their first reaction is, “Ugh!!!.” Not in my case. School is an underused opportunity to express yourself, even if you have to wear a uniform like me! The wonderful thing about being in school is that you have a get-out-of-jail-free-pass for fashion mishaps. Every person has worn something in school that they later regret. Without mistakes you never learn, so why not make them while you’re young so you have an excuse?

Vince camutoVince Camuto boots and H&M skirt, scored at Reruns!

No stylish woman I know started out completely stylish. She had to play around and find what worked best for her. All that being said, school is a golden opportunity to play! If you do have a uniform, like me, here are the basics of what you need to play around. Even if you don’t have a uniform, these basics will work for you.

I find having a snazzy collection of accessories will spice up even the most austere looking uniform. My back to school staples consist of: a few pairs of cute and comfy boots (some girls brave stilettos at my school…more power to them!), some solid colored cardigansfun accessories, and a few one-of-a-kind pieces to wow your friends with.

FP and GapA Free People cardigan and Gap boots are killer consignment finds!

Just one warning! Some people get extremely excited about dressing for the first day of school and make the mistake of wearing all their cool pieces within the first couple days. Make sure you don’t wear all your cool pieces too soon, spread them out a bit so you’ll feel fresh and cute for a while.

Comme des garcons

This blouse, a piece from avant-garde designer Comme de Garcon is the best Reruns find, hands down!

Some of my friends at school believe my wardrobe to be quite extensive, truth is, I just mix and match. With a few pieces I can create several outfits and so can you! Most importantly, make sure whatever you decide to wear makes you feel comfortable, fabulous and you! Have a great school year and remember “whoever makes the most mistakes wins!” Did I really say that? Yup.

Toodles!

Paris

Stretch Your Wardrobe

Answer me this, have you ever had one of those mornings when things were just not rolling the way you wanted? We’re talkin’ an out of coffee, big presentation, cat threw up on your favorite pair of shoes, and the blouse you were going to wear is at the dry cleaners because someone (wink wink) forgot to pick it up.

Yeah, we thought so.

That’s why we took it upon ourselves to compile a how to guide on stress-free dressing.

Stretch Your Wardrobe!

With only 18 pieces, we were able to craft an entire wardrobe of continuously awesome looks. When dreaming up new outfits, make your garments play double or even triple duty. The combinations are endless, so dive in and get creative. Besides, you have way better and more pressing things to think about than what the heck to put on in the morning.

Here are the basics of what you’ll need:

1. T-Shirts are like fine wine, women, and cheese…they only get better with age. So pick one out and never let it go…like a good man.

2. When you go for whimsy and glam in a blouse, tone it down with a dark or muted color. Keep it monochromatic, and it will go further in your closet.

3. A great basic is a lovely blouse that can be worn tucked or untucked, and paired with a bottom.

4. Babe-a-licious but feminine, strapless blouses can be worn so many ways you need to have one or two.

5. Comfortable shorts that can go casual or classy will save you in the summer.

6. & 7. Full-length skirts are perfect for evening or office. Again, simple clean lines give you a simple clean silhouette. Keep the color uniform so you can go bold or subdued.

8. A good pencil skirt that works for 9-5 or on your date night will be your best friend. Trust me. It’s “Go To” sexy, and adds instant sex appeal when needed.

9. We know you love blazers but try a fitted, well-structured khaki cargo jacket. Not only is it utilitarian, it’s hot when paired with that sexy pencil skirt. *see video coming soon!

10. When you need some warmth and collegiate appeal you must have a cardigan, but not just any cardigan. No, it has to be perfectly tailored, well made, and 100% natural fiber; crops of balled up polyester under your armpits is not sexy. No way. No how. Just do yourself a favor, will ya, and invest.

11. – 13. A monochromatic, long, lightweight scarf that can go from summer to winter and even double as a blouse or wrap is the perfect accessory.

14. A casual but kick-ass canvas tote for bumming around days or carrying an extra heavy load makes your day a little less difficult.

15. Don’t be scared to sport an unusual color when you’re choosing your purse. As long as it’s high quality leather and design, I say go for it.

16. – 18. Statement necklaces are under-rated in my opinion. I think they rule, and I couldn’t get by without one. To zazz up a casual look, all you have to do is throw on a bold necklace. Every woman needs a power necklace she wears on blah days.

Now, scroll through the pics and pick up on the details. When you’re done go forth and stretch your wardrobe from hassle to heavenly.
